We all know that first impressions are really important … when we walk up to a paypoint at our local supermarket, we’re irritated when there is zero eye contact from the cashier, or when she’s too busy having a conversation with her fellow worker on the other side of the shop, right?

Now, more than ever, frontline communication in the veterinary environment is seen to play a pivotal role in the success or failure of vet shops and the veterinary practice’s front shop area. The truth of the matter is, even if your pricing and range are really competitive, the customer’s return spending is often determined by the interaction he or she experiences with frontline staff.

Education plays a vital role, and oftentimes, vets are so busy with their patients that little time, if any, is spent on doing in house training of veterinary reception and sales personell. Furthermore, when it comes to sales or technical training for veterinary staff most vets have no formal strategy or plan for the development of their staff. In fact according to research, only 16 percent of general business companies develop and deliver all training in-house. This means that veterinarians are not far off from the rest of the crowd. However, we have always been a progressive, trend setting and innovative profession, and as such we can change the world by changing the way we educate our staff and ourselves.
